The Magnets are a six-piece a cappella band. I went to see them at their Fringe show ‘Audiocity’ at the Spiegeltent in George Square Gardens last night with a few friends, two of whom had seen them before and are big fans.
They were amazing! I had looked them up on YouTube before we went and was already impressed by the way they use only their voices to create music, but it was even better live. The singing, harmonising and beat boxing was so brilliant, I forgot at times that no musical instruments were used at all!
It wasn’t the original six, as I believe some of the founding members have retired. I think there are more than six of them now, performing at different times. Last night’s line-up was – Michael Welton, Callum McIntosh, Michael Conway, Cameron Jones, Damion Scarcella and ‘Hobbit’. Each singer took the lead for at least one song and the beat boxer got to do his own thing too. They were all so good and brought a bit of their own personalities to the show.
They performed a wide variety of songs from all different genres. Can You Feel It, Paradise City, Barbie Girl, Jolene, All Shook Up, Up Town Funk to name a few. The venue was full and there was such a great atmosphere. Everyone got up on their feet at the end to dance. The band put a post on Facebook afterwards to say we were their loudest, singiest audience yet. I was certainly doing my bit to sing along!
Sadly there are only 2 days left of the Fringe Festival, so you’ll have to be quick if you want to see them this time around. I would really recommend it. It was such a fun show – one of the best I’ve seen in a long time!
