Lunch at The Salisbury Arms

Tue 14 Mar 2017

The Salisbury Arms in Newington has just re-opened after a major refurbishment. I was invited along with my family to review their new menu last weekend. I remember this pub from over a decade ago, when it was called The Crags. It was very much a student bar back then and I was intrigued to see how it had changed.

The place is unrecognisable – far more upmarket than it was in my student days. The bar is bright and airy and beautifully decorated. The restaurant area, where we were seated, has a cosier feel. I love the modern floral fabrics, blue colour scheme and warm lighting, which creates a nice relaxed atmosphere.

I ordered the Crispy Duck Wings for starters, served with plum, hoisin sweet chilli glaze and roasted plum. They were coated in toasted sesame seeds, which gave them a lovely flavour and texture. For my main course I had the Hand-Pulled Chicken and Lovage Pesto Pizza with mozzarella and roasted Mediterranean vegetables. It was light, crispy and full of flavour. Pesto was used instead of a traditional tomato topping, which was nice for a change.

My husband ordered Bury Black Pudding Potato Cake to start, followed by Slow-cooked Pork Belly and Seared Scallops. They hadn’t received their delivery of scallops and offered lobster as an alternative. He wasn’t really sure if he liked lobster but decided to give it a try and was pleasantly surprised.

My son had the Sausage and Mash and my daughter had the Tomato Linguine, both from the Children’s Menu. The kids are aged just 2 and 4 and the portions were quite large for them. However, their meals must have been extra tasty because they both ate far more than they usually do. They both chose Chocolate Brownie with Vanilla Ice-cream for dessert and polished off every last bit.

My husband and I couldn’t resist ordering the House Sharer for pudding, even though we were already full. This is a platter of sweets – Apple and Blackberry Crumble, Chocolate Brownie, New York Style Cheesecake, Lemon Tart, Strawberries and an Ice Cream Cookie Sandwich. Priced the same as two regular desserts, it’s fantastic value. Everything was delicious, but my favourite was the baked cheesecake, which was simply amazing.

The Salisbury Arms is a lovely family-friendly pub and restaurant. It is very relaxed and the staff are so welcoming and attentive. A three course lunch comes to about £30 per adult, and a two course kids meal is under £8. I think this is good value for the excellent quality of food and service. Perfect for a special meal or celebration.
