I was recently asked to review the new Las Iguanas restaurant, which opened on George Street last month. I jumped at the chance as I have been to Las Iguanas in London and Aberdeen already and loved it. I was delighted to hear one was finally opening in Edinburgh. So last Saturday I went along with my husband and daughter to check it out.
We received a warm welcome and were quickly seated on the ground level, looking out towards George Street. The restaurant was very modern in design, and felt fresh and inviting. I loved the latin music that was playing in the background, it made me feel like I was on holiday! The cocktail menu looked great and I was pleased to see they had a good choice of non-alcoholic cocktails too. I ordered a delicious Tropical Cooler (mango, pineapple, lime and lemonade) while I looked at the menu, which added to the holiday feeling.
The menu is Latin American themed, with an extensive choice of dishes inspired by South American, Spanish, Portuguese and African cuisine. I decided to go for the Marinated Strip-Steak Fajitas cooked with coriander, lime, paprika, cumin, onions and peppers and served with jalapeños and tortillas. My husband ordered the Mexican Smoked Chipotle Chicken Chimichanga with spring onion and garlic rice, and refried beans. Both dishes came with guacamole, sour cream and tomato salsa on the side, and we also ordered Sweet Potato Fries and Patatas Bravas with smokey chipotle sauce.
Everything was very tasty and filling. Lots of flavour but not too spicy. We were both extremely full after all that, but we were still tempted by dessert, so we shared a piece of Creamy Caramel Cake topped with caramelised cream and blueberries. It was amazing!
The kids menu was also very good. My daughter, who is almost 2, had Breaded Fish Strips with Fries.
She is a very fussy eater, but she seemed to enjoy it. For dessert she had Chocolate Brownie served with vanilla ice cream. Needless to say, this went down very well.
To sum up, I thought the food, drinks and service were excellent and the atmosphere was great too. The prices looked similar to other chain restaurants with three courses from about £20 per person. They had a good lunch time deal on too. I will certainly be back – as I want to try out their tapas selection!
